•Attempt in good faith to adhere to criteria listed on the application. Inappropriate prescribing means potentially fewer available spaces for those who need them.

•Learn how to decline placard requests when not indicated, by using teachable moments when possible. For example, an overweight patient who requests a placard, but who has no qualifying condition, might be told that parking farther from their destination is of greater benefit, not only from a health point of view, but it also is less stressful and easier on the gas pump than driving in circles looking for the closest space. This, of course, needs to be done with sensitivity so as not to strain the doctor-patient relationship.

•Reinforce with the patient that the placard may be used only when that person is driving, or someone is driving the placard holder and waiting for them. While this may seem obvious, invoking this admonition may carry some moral weight.

•Be an advocate, in whatever way possible, to help stem the tide of placard abuse. Because one incentive for abuse is monetary savings, policy changes should be made that provide appropriate accommodations for the disabled, while recognizing that being disabled doesn't mean one can't afford to or shouldn't pay. Various cities across the country have been instrumental in trying to get legislators to repeal the law in many states that still basically gives free lifetime parking for placard holders.13- Bialick A.
